The Brief

APSS was asked by private label coffee roaster Lincoln & York to create a new coffee innovation and tasting room. As Lincoln & York had grown significantly, it wanted an impressive space with a wow factor. A space to bring customers at the roastery, that reflected its status as the leading private label coffee roaster in the UK. The room needed to be functional, allowing customers to taste blends and try coffee while showcasing the expertise within the Lincoln and York coffee team.

The challenge

The room needed to have a dual purpose as a working coffee lab for quality control, blend matching and development and a customer meeting space. The space was also dated and in need of a renovation.

Solution

Following the client briefing, APSS undertook a survey, planned the space and created a set of designs. The Lincoln & York leadership team were invited to APSS’ office to view the design proposals and take a ‘virtual walk' around the new facility using the VR headset to help bring the designs to life.

As part of the plans, APSS increased the size of the viewing window from the innovation room which looked down into the production area. This allows Lincoln & York customers to see the production process firsthand including the coffee roasting area.

For the internal fit out, APSS provided ceiling and wall decoration in addition to new flooring. The joinery team manufactured the kitchen units to house all the required equipment and created slatted wall with LED lighting to zone the space. APSS supplied the furniture and Lincoln & York’s existing coffee tasting table was refurbished to include a new graphic wheel depicting flavour notes to facilitate customer presentations.

As the client sources coffee from over 40 countries globally a bespoke wall-mounted ‘Coffee flavours of the world’ graphic was installed by the APSS team, highlighting the largest coffee nations and flavour profiles (taste, harvest and coffee type) produced in those countries. While the Lincoln & York illuminated sign added a strong branding element.

In order to create a great coffee tasting experience for Lincoln & York’s customers, APSS installed red feature lighting above the tasting table, along with blackout blinds on all the windows and doors. This allowed for a full atmospheric and sensory experience when tasting the coffee without being influenced by outside factors.

Working closely with Lincoln and York throughout the process, APSS were able to ensure all requirements were met to the highest standards. Using their creativity, skills and experience the team were able to overcome challenges and adapt their proposals as the project evolved.

Outcome and client benefits

The space has been transformed into a fully functioning innovation and meeting room and Lincoln & York has received extremely positive feedback from its customers.

Lincoln & York’s new facility now has a great space for customer meetings, and the team can capitalise on the emerging trends in the market through the latest innovations incorporated into the kitchen including the Marco tap system, an instant hot and cold water tap.

Lincoln & York will use the facility as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations during 2024 as it provides the perfect location for both showcasing the brand and entertaining guests.
