The Brief

Loughborough University sought to develop a unique digital space that empowers students to be future-fit for the world of work. The university envisioned a facility that would blend cutting-edge technology with practical learning experiences, creating an immersive and interactive space that supports science, engineering, and technology.

The brief was centred around creating a versatile space that would attract new students on open days, host public events, and provide an engaging learning environment for students and teachers. The design needed to incorporate a multi-functional robot fighting pit, a flexible floor plan, innovative lighting and adaptable furniture.

The Challenge

One of the main hurdles was ensuring the space could facilitate the complex demands of modern science, engineering, and technology education. The university needed a digital space that wasn’t just a collection of advanced equipment, but an adaptable space with flexibility for students and teachers.

As work was carried out during term time, precautions were taken to minimise disruption whilst maintaining the security of the facility. Within the robot pit, the vinyl flooring needed to be durable and sit flush between areas. Carpet was used around desks to aid acoustics, ensuring style and practicality. The space needed to be adaptable for different events, with movable and stackable furniture that could adhere to different layouts. Lighting needed to be suitable for different occasions and moods.

The Outcome

Loughborough University now boasts a cutting-edge digital space with advanced, multi-functional use and DigiLabs graphics. The space is equipped with the latest high-tech equipment, enabling users to engage in activities that mirror real-world challenges. The innovative design with a multi-purpose robot fighting pit, flexible lighting and movable furniture promotes collaboration in a dynamic environment that fosters creativity and problem-solving.

DigiLabs is now recognised as a leading example of how digital spaces can transform educational experiences and equip students with the skills needed to succeed in the job market. Loughborough University now have a fantastic area to show case for visitors and prospective students.
