APSS was contacted to take over the design and fit out of a new specialist school for children who struggle in a normal school environment. Working to tight timescales, APSS designed a new facility for an empty shell. The designs incorporate a different type of environment to provide a stable and nurturing facility where students can feel relaxed whilst learning.
The team took into consideration the acoustics within the space, cost-effective finishes, the school’s ethos and teaching strategies, and safeguarding the children.
A new mezzanine helped double floor space and the introduction of curtain walling to the exterior enhance the building's acoustic and thermal performance whilst also providing more natural light.
With blue themes throughout, the interior promotes a calming environment. There are large feature walls across the building including a large forest graphic in the dining hall and tonal blue walls in classrooms which appears to blend in with the carpet finishes.
